Poll of the Week: DIY

Back in the eighties DIY was a predominant feature of the Goth Subculture. As Goth friendly things have become easier to find. There has been some talk (for a long time) by both young and old that DIY is slowly transitioning out of the life style, among other things because of this reliance. Do you think that DIY isn't as necessary in the Goth (and other such subcultures) because of the larger supply of clothing and accessories? Is it still a large part of the life style to you or in your scene?

Tell me your thoughts?

Do you still DIY?
  • Yes.
  • No.
Comment also if you think there should be a middle option to the choices.

Best wishes,
-Sary

  1. I DIY because I want to have as different clothes that I can have. I want to look an individual.

I've never DIY cause I have no skills in sewing or anything x) I wrecked sewing machines (by a mistake!) in junior high while making the simplest skirt ever xD Even though I love deathrock style, I always tend to be a lot more goth (or metalhead) than punk.

  3. I DIY for items I cannot find in stores (stockings ripped the way I like, some bloomers), but I do enjoy the plethora of Goth clothing basics that have found their way into the mainstream shops (also thrift stores).

I don't think DIY is necessary, but it's great if you want to edit preexisting items into a certain style. But I don't think it should be a needed thing for all gothy wardrobes.

  5. I'd love TO DIY, but that's just something I can't focus on right now. But little LITTLE things I can do. Like...sewing a hole or something...

  6. I became a goth in the end of the 80's. In my neighbourhood was a fabric shop were you could buy cheap fabrics by the weight. I started to sew a lot of clothes then, and have continued to do so. I always got nice compliments for my clothes. I've been making my own jewellery for a few years as well. DIY is cheaper, looks better (if you have skills) and more unique. :)

  7. I'm a big fan of DIY. Being somewhat artistic and all, it gives be the opportunity to create the exact look I had in mind. Even when I buy something in a goth friendly store I end up doing some modification on it.
When I was younger and on a budget, since it's cheaper, DIY save my sense of style and fashion.
It also provides you with unique pieces to show off. ^.^

I'm trying to DIY but I seem to be a bit horrible at it. I'm trying though.

  9. when i have time i really love to diy, guess thats how a lot of us started (i grew up in a very small town and my clothing went darky in 1998 when i was 11... no chance of shopping for ready-made-goth-clothing back then) :-D love to use & see those things but sadly at my current job it's not really possible to have enough time (diy in a hurry = nope)

  10. I still love DIY projects, because I like to make things that are unique and catered specifically to my style. Even when I shop for more Goth-tinged clothing (the dreaded Hot Topic every now and then) I still end up altering most of the things I buy.

  11. I think that DIY is a part of the subculture and necessary if you feel like. It's a cheap way of getting new and modified clothing. I'm a fan!

  13. I love DIY! Whenever it is making a garment from scratch by sewing myself, or just taking an existing item and be creative with it.

I don't think that DIY is a must, but I do like seeing DIY stuff because it gives a personal touch to your style / outfit.

And my favourite DIY thing are the leather jackets. I love mine and I also love to see other people their customized leather jackets!

  15. I absolutely still DIY, it allows one to have their clothing/hair exactly the way you want it! Also, it allows one to have unique, one-of-a-kind items for their wardrobe. In a world where goth clothing is more readily available, I think it is even MORE important to DIY to keep your style unique. DIY is also a great option for people who are budget-conscious as it can be less expensive than buying ready-made items.
